My wife thought I was crazy for 6 months. Every day for hours I would be glued to the computer screen typing away furiously. I tried to explain what I was doing but she still thought I had a screw loose. She has changed her opinion since I started making money online. The life of an internet marketer and those who plough the furrow of SEO can be a lonely one at times. There is a long delay sometimes between the effort and the results. It is easy to lose faith. In a way I’m glad most people give up as it reduces the competition.
In the travel theme the major news on the SEO front is Google’s adoption of putting hotels, restaurants etc. with websites with geo marking in their list at the top of the page. This is prior to the top 10. So if you you are number 1 for a search term you will only be at the bottom of the first screen page for that term. It is irritating that Google has done this but not fatal. A lot of people whether consciously or unconsciously will ignore these unwarranted inclusions and scroll down to the sites that have made the top 10 on their SEO merits.
People don’t necessarily want to go to the website of one particular business. They want an overview. This is what I do. I have travelled all over the world (the interesting parts in my opinion) from Tierra del Fuego to Cartagena, from Hong Kong to Kampala. I’m addicted to visiting developing countries and obscure destinations. The USA and Australia holds no fascination for me. The Amazon, Colombian beaches, the Mongolian plains do.
I have turned my experiences into websites. Travel (much to my chagrin) has turned into a consumer product. Rather than rail in my cups about it, I try to make money off it. From going to full moon parties to trekking to Machu Picchu I write about it. And then most importantly get links for my writing. There are plenty of affiliate ways to make money from travel writing.
I never understand people who give content to TripAdvisor, Expedia, Lonely Planet etc. They are only fueling the success of corporate identities who care more about the bottom line then about travel. Write for yourself.
Finally, video (especially Youtube) is playing a more important role in travel sites SEO. People don’t want to see pictures anymore of a destination or a hotel. They want video footage. Upload your videos and link to your site. The include that footage in your site. It will do wonders for your traffic.
Just as the culture of world travel is continually changing, so is the SEO scene for this theme. There are always new challenges, but nothing in the end replaces first hand experience. Even my wife is now beginning to understand this.
When it comes to SEO there are plenty of options that are open to those of us with a website to promote. It really comes down to finding your audience and providing them with value. This is clearly two different parts of the whole. Without offering value, you’re not going to grow your audience. However, without an audience, you may start to wonder why you’re even running your website.
You really just have to have faith in what you’re doing. There are plenty of ways to connect with people and find your audience who will often become your online friends.
